The boys are now one years old, so I wanted to think through and try to describe their personalities as we have gotten to know them over the last year. It really has been an amazing experience to watch Calvin and Jett grow and really see their different personalities come out. A really fun part of having the twins is seeing them interact and play together. At this age, Piper barely paid any attention to other kids, and didn't for a long time. Jett and Calvin are so cute, they often will hold hands or lean their heads together in an affectionate way. They are always following each other around, getting into things together, and have started to wrestle a little bit. Just yesterday they were playing in the kitchen and Calvin bopped Jett in the face, I thought Jett was going to cry, but instead he got a big smile and tackled Calvin back and then they both started laughing.
So far they really seem to get along well, I really hope they stay best buddies and really enjoy this unique opportunity they have of being a twin.
Calvin Judah is twin A (the first born). When I was pregnant, another twin mom told me that often the dynamic of the relationship between twins is started in the womb. She said that usually twin A is more domineering towards twin B and twin B is more laid back about letting twin A have their way. The first example of this being when they take their places of who gets to come out of the womb first. Who knows how much truth there is to this, but I do see Calvin seems to demand his way and Jett does seem more laid back about what Calvin wants. Calvin is way more vocal about wanting to be picked up out of the stroller first, Jett is fine either way. Often what ever toy Jett has, Calvin wants it and will try to take it. Unless Jett really, really wants the particular toy, he will let Calvin have it and find something else.
I am kind of painting a picture of Calvin being a bully, but it is not the case, Calvin is really a sweet boy. He is a total snuggler and he loves kisses and being tickled. He is very social and is very quick to give a smile to anyone who looks his way. He waves at strangers and loves the attention of being a twin. When there are other kids around, Calvin always seems to make friends and wants to be a part of the activities.

Calvin has good body awareness and has quickly gotten how to climb up and climb down from things. He can go up and down stairs and is pretty good with hand/eye coordination. He loves to put things in holes or put smaller toys in bigger toys. He just barely has one tooth and another half tooth poking through his lower gum. He doesn't seem very interested in walking though is very good at furniture surfing and standing up while holding on to something. Calvin is a mama's boy, if he is whining or crying about something, sometimes only I can comfort him.
There has been a few times that Calvin has cried so hard that he has passed out. The first time it happened, he had just smashed his arm in a drawer and the pinch must have really hurt and/or scared him. Anyway he started crying in a way that he kept taking breaths in but nothing was coming out. Usually that would result in a really loud scream, but this time instead he lost his breath, turned blue and went limp unconscious. It was so scary, Dave was in the middle of calling 911 and out of instinct I put my mouth over his and breathed in and could feel the air catch his and he came back crying. The few other times he has done this, it has been because he was mad and the doctor said it is similar to being stubborn where a kid will literally hold their breath on purpose until they pass out. Seems like a sign of him being very stubborn and strong willed, yikes!
Calvin makes the best squishy faces and has since day one at the hospital. I remember describing him as the one with the squishy face. He is pretty vocal, though neither boy has as many words as Piper did at this age. Calvin says mama, more ("Mo"), meow and can do an elephant sound. He is pretty demanding when it comes to wanting to try whatever I am eating. On our RV trip I was eating something super spicy and he wouldn't give up yelling "Mo" at me, so finally I let him lick the fork and he immediately put his had to his mouth and started crying. Poor buddy! =-)
We don't have too many nicknames for Calvin, one of the first ones was Calvinator (in place of Terminator). The one that has stuck the most was coined by Piper...Malvin. We don't tend to call him Cal, though other people have done so. There is not a whole lot that rhymes with Calvin, so he just may be straight Calvin.
Jett Everett is twin B. He really is quite laid back for the most part. Jett has his scream that stops the world from going round until he stops, but really he doesn't pull out that trump card nearly as often as he used to. Thank god! Jett seems a little shy, he usually turns his head when strangers talk to him and seems to want Calvin to soak up most of the attention. But he will smile and bashfully take in the love as well. Jett has a more serious expression for the most part, but then he will smile or laugh and light up the room. Jett is pretty independent, he will play by himself and in social situations he seems to be more on the outskirts and observing.
Jett LOVES music! He is always swaying to the tunes we have playing, seems drawn to musical instruments and always seems to stop what he is doing and notice music where ever it is coming from. Jett has his two bottom teeth that came in just before he turned one and the two upper teeth have just barely cut through. He isn't walking yet either, but has been really practicing standing without holding on to anything. Though just today he did take 3 steps, then dove to the ground. He was so proud of himself, it was adorable.
Jett has always been pretty stiff, not that snuggly at all, but more recently he has been able to relax more and tuck his head into the nook of my neck and cuddle in, just for a few seconds, but it feels so good. He does love snuffles, he is super ticklish and has the best happy high pitch laugh that turns into a cackle. So funny. For as serious as he is, Jett actually laughs pretty easily. He loves being turned upside down and playing chase. Even though he was second to learn to crawl by a full month compared to Calvin, he is quite a bit faster. He has these short/tight/quick moves that speeds him across the room.
Jett is super gentle with our plants and Mango, he is very interested and loves to touch them very softly. Actually Jett really loves watching birds and animals. He will sit super still and seems to take in the beauty. I have several memories of being impressed with his concentration and admiration watching birds from our lanai in Kauai, and dancers during random dancing performances he has seen. He loves to clap. He claps for himself, for Calvin, in the stroller going for a walk, where ever, he is always clapping. High 5's are also up there on one of his favorite things to do.
Jett has lots of nicknames, and we tend to call him these more than his actual name. He is JettE, pronounced Jetty, but stands for Jett Everett. Also, Jetty Juice, Jetty Juice Box, just plain Juice, The Juice is Loose and sometimes even The Moose is Loose. Also Jetty Spaghettie!
Both boys absolutely love Piper. They love her attention, she makes them laugh harder than anything else. Piper is really good with them too. She has taken her role of big sister very seriously and loves taking care of them. Just the other day we were at the library and the boys were crawling all around the kids area and Piper was looking out for them making sure she knew where they both were at all times. When I had them both strapped back in the stroller she took turns putting her head up to theirs and said, "Ohhhhh, I love you always and forever!" They both just beamed.
By the way...check out Piper's new haircut! The battle of brushing her hair was becoming too much, so she allowed braids for one last day...then BAM, she has short hair and she loves it.
